Bulgaria has good-value copies of classic French styles, using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and some passable Chardonnay.
The national varieties of red wine are Gamza, Pamid, Mavrud, and Melnik; all good varieties for slightly jammy, juicy reds. Quality can be a hit or miss, but the wines are inexpensive.
The principal local white varieties are Rkatziteli and Dimiat, although recent success with Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer means that the native grapes are losing poularity.
