Cystitis is inflammation of the lining of the bladder caused by irritation, infection or damage. Although the condition can develop in both men and women, it is far more common in women, with over 2 million women in the UK suffering from the condition every year. If treated quickly, the condition is not usually serious; however, the discomfort can be chronic and disabling. Untreated infections can cause kidney or other infections and damage.
Although the condition is relatively common in women, it poses a more serious threat for men, as it may be caused by an underlying prostate or bladder infection, a tumour or an enlarged prostate.
In this section, you can find out more about the causes and symptoms of cystitis, along with information on how it may be diagnosed and treated.
