Acne is a skin condition in which the sebaceous glands produce increased amounts of sebum (oil) that block the hair follicles to produce blackheads, pimples and whiteheads.
The condition usually develops around the time of puberty and usually clears up by the early twenties, but in some cases may persist into the patient's thirties and forties. Acne affects almost 80% of people aged between 11 and 30 at some point in their lives.
