Toro

Toro has made a huge comeback in the last fifteen years, with its rich, ripe and powerful red wines, packed with complex flavours and aromas. They have a combination of top-range strength, full fruit, freshness and acidity as well as the ability to age well.

Almost all the red wines are 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) varietals, but some growers add a little Verdejo, Garnacha or even Cabernet-Sauvignon.

Location
Situated north-west of Rueda, in Castilla and León.

Grapes

  • Red: Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo)
  • White: Malvasía, Verdejo

Tinta de Toro makes excellent young wines, but approximately 25% of the reds are now held back for ageing (crianza).

Smaller quantities of white and rosé wines are made, and dessert whites are made from the Malvasía.

Toro is quite good value, although prices have risen recently.
