Parkinson's disease is a progressive condition that affects the nervous system. First described by London physician Dr James Parkinson in 1817, the condition causes muscle tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement.
Although Parkinson's normally develops in people over the age of 50 and increases in incidence with increasing age, 500 of the 10,000 people diagnosed each year in the UK are under the age of 40. This is known as young-onset Parkinson's.
In this section, you'll find a range of information about Parkinson's disease, including how it develops, the symptoms it causes, how it may be diagnosed and the methods that may be used to treat it.
