Network cards (or Network adapters) are used to connect your computer to a network. Whether this is a Local Area Network (LAN) or a Wide Area Network (WAN), or even just to another PC. The speed of the Network card dictates the speed of transfer. A standard 10/100 or 10/100/1000 is enough for any home PC, unless you require a super fast file transfer system. The speed of the network adapter is quoted in Mbps (Megabits per second) or Gbps (Gigabits per second), where 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps) is referred to as fast ethernet.
10/100 and 10/100/1000 are the maximum transfer speeds of the network card. If your network is limited on speed, then your network card won't be using its full potential. It works the other way too: if your network transfers at a super high speed and your card can't reach those speeds, you will be restricting the data transfer rate to and from your PC.
