Although everybody has temporary feelings of worry or anxiety from time to time, some people suffer from an anxiety disorder, in which they have excessive anxiety that interferes with their day-to-day life.
Anxiety disorder is a long-term illness that affects around 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives. It is more common between the ages of 20 and 30, and affects more women than men. It is also often present with another psychological illness such as schizophrenia or depression. Treatment involves counselling or psychotherapy, medicines or a combination of these.
In this section, we've put together a guide to the causes and symptoms of anxiety disorder, along with some information on how it may be diagnosed and treated.
