Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism (also known as thyrotoxicosis) is a condition whereby the thyroid gland becomes overactive. This results in an excess of the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which speed up the body's functions, causing symptoms such as weight loss, anxiety and restlessness. In many cases, the gland becomes enlarged (goitre) or contains nodules of overactive thyroid tissue.

Approximately 1 in 50 women develop hyperthyroidism in the UK every year, whereas the condition affects only 1 in 1,000 men.
