Hypothyroidism is a condition whereby the thyroid gland becomes under-active. This creates a deficiency of the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which results in a slowing down of the body's functions, causing tiredness, weight gain and memory problems.
This condition can be present from birth (congenital hypothyroidism) or it may develop during childhood. Unless treatment is given, the child will not develop properly, either physically or mentally. The adult form of this condition, which affects five times as many women as men, is also known as myxoedema. Women are at particular risk of developing the disease around the time of the menopause.
In this section, you'll find a guide to the causes and symptoms of hyperthyroidism, along with information on its means of diagnosis and methods of treatment.
