A cataract is a painless eye disorder, in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque, gradually worsening the eyesight and eventually leading to blindness. Although they may form for a number of reasons, their most common cause is the progressive deterioration of the lens structure due to advancing age. Almost a third of people over 65 have cataracts in one or both eyes.
Cataracts may eventually cloud the whole lens, causing blindness in that eye. However, they may be treated by a quick and painless operation, whereby the affected lens is taken out and replaced with an artificial one.
