The female reproductive system includes the ovaries, which store and release eggs into the fallopian tubes and into the uterus (womb). Also part of the system is the vagina, which connects the uterus to the outside of the body and is protected by folds of skins known as labia. The labia also protect the delicate tissues of the clitoris, which becomes enlarged during sexual arousal. The ovaries are also responsible for secreting hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone that control the menstrual cycles and sexual development. The breasts also form part of the reproductive system as they provide milk after childbirth and play a part in sexual arousal.
In this section, you'll find a guide to the common conditions and diseases that affect the female reproductive system, including cervical cancer, cancer of the uterus (womb), breast cancer, fibroids, painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
