Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva - a thin, transparent membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inner surfaces of the eyelids. Also known as 'pink eye', conjunctivitis can cause soreness, redness, itchiness, swelling of the eyelid and discharge from the eye.
There are two major types of conjunctivitis: infective and allergic. Infective conjunctivitis is the most common type, and is caused by bacteria or viruses. Allergic conjunctivitis develops when the body attacks irritants (such as pollen or make-up) in the eye, causing inflammation.
