Diagnosing Hernias

Hernias are usually diagnosed by the doctor feeling the swollen area and then asking the patient to cough. This enables them to note any resulting increase of pressure over the swelling. The doctor will also check to see if the bulge is reducible; that is, if it can be manually pushed back into the abdomen.
