How to Prevent Gastroenteritis

The best way to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis or other intestinal infections is to follow a few simple hygiene precautions.

Day to Day Precautions

  • Always wash hands before preparing and eating food. Warm water and soap should be used, vigorously rubbing the hands (including around cuticles, beneath fingernails and in the creases of the hands) for at least 10 seconds.
  • Always wash hands after using the toilet, playing with pets or gardening.
  • Keep raw meat separate from cooked foods.

Precautions When Travelling

  • Only drink sealed bottled water.
  • Avoid ice cubes - they may be made from contaminated water.
  • Use bottled water when brushing teeth.
  • Avoid eating undercooked meat and fish.
  • Avoid raw food that may have been touched by human hands, including raw vegetables, salads and peeled fruits.

Additional Precautions During Infection

  • Use disinfectant to wipe the handle and seat after each use by the infected person.
  • Clean the toilet regularly.
  • Do not share towels or flannels.
  • Do not allow the infected person to prepare food.
  • Use separate utensils, glasses and plates.
  • Keep the infected home from nursery, school or work for at least 24 hours after the last diarrhoea or vomiting episode.
