A hernia develops when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the surrounding tissue wall or muscle. In addition to hiatus hernias (which is where the stomach pushes its way up through the diaphragm), there are a number of other hernias, including inguinal (groin), femoral (thigh) and umbilical (navel). The most common type is the inguinal hernia, which affects nearly 50 times as many men as women. Femoral hernias and umbilical hernias are more common in women.
We've put together a guide to the different types of hernia, with information on their causes and symptoms, along with advice on their diagnosis and treatment.
