A hernia is a term that describes the protrusion of an organ from one part of the body into another. This most commonly happens when a loop of intestine bulges through a weakened part of the abdomen wall to form a lump under the skin. Although a hernia may be referred to as a rupture, this is somewhat misleading, as no part of the structure becomes torn.
Types of hernia are classified according to their site; the most common type is found in the groin (inguinal hernia), although they may also be found in the thorax (hiatus hernia), the thigh (femoral hernia) and the navel (umbilical hernia).
In this section, you can find out about hiatus hernia and other types of hernia, including their causes, symptoms and treatment.
