Cancer of the stomach (also known as gastric cancer) is a form of cancer that can appear as an ulcer or tumour in the inner lining of the stomach. Less frequently, it may spread throughout the stomach lining without forming a discrete lump (known as a diffuse tumour). It may also spread to other organs such as the liver, pancreas, small intestine and bowel.
Stomach cancer is the 6th most common form of cancer in the UK, with around 10,000 people diagnosed with the disease every year. 65% of these cases are men. It becomes more common with increasing age, occurring mainly after the age of 50 and reaching a peak in the 70s. More than 90% of cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 55.
