Coronary heart disease (CHD) kills more than 110,000 people every year in England alone. Also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), this condition is the result of the formation of atheromatous plaques (accumulations of deposits, from the Latin, 'athero' meaning 'porridge') within the walls of the arteries that supply the muscle of the heart. This results in a dangerous shortage in the blood supply to the heart muscle (the myocardium). The majority of sufferers show no indications of the disease until the first onset of symptoms, often a heart attack, finally occur. This is usually after decades of progression.
In this section, you'll find information on the effects and symptoms of CHD, along with information on its diagnosis and treatment.
