Raynaud's is a condition in which the blood vessels (arteries) that supply blood to the fingers or toes narrow, limiting blood circulation to these extremities. This causes the fingers or toes to become white and cold, with pins and needles and numbness. They eventually turn blue then red, and small painful blisters may also develop. Attacks vary in length from minutes to hours.
Named after the French physician, Marice Raynaud who described the condition in 1862, Raynauds is thought to affect as many as 10 million people in the UK. 9 out of 10 of sufferers are women, and it is thought that approximately 10% of women in the UK suffer from the condition to some degree.
