As varicose veins lie just below the skin surface where they may be seen or felt, diagnosis of the condition is usually a fairly simple matter. However, the doctor will usually also want to check the patient's medical history to find out whether there have been any incidents of blood clots (including deep vein thrombosis) in the family.
The doctor may also want to make sure that the swelling is not caused by a blockage in a deep vein, and so may refer the patient to a specialist, who may carry out a series of tests such as a Doppler ultrasound to find out how the blood is flowing.
