Treatment of Anaemia

If you have been diagnosed with anaemia, your treatment will depend on its type and cause. Some common examples of treatments are shown in the table below.

Cause Treatment
Iron deficiency Iron tablets, or possibly an iron injection
Vitamin B12 deficiency Vitamin B12 injection
Folate deficiency Folate tablets
Acute blood loss Blood transfusion

Anyone who has been suffering from chronic bleeding into the stomach from taking medication such as aspirin will obviously be advised to refrain from taking any further doses. Other sorts of bleeding (from an ulcer, for example), will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Your doctor will also probably recommend a suitable diet. Iron-rich foods include:

  • red meat (particularly beef liver)
  • chicken
  • oysters
  • green, leafy vegetables
  • dried fruits such as apricots, prunes and raisins
  • dried beans
  • whole grains
  • almonds
  • seaweeds
  • parsley

It is also important to ensure that adequate amounts of vitamin C are taken, as this helps the iron to be absorbed by the body.

Some foods are best avoided as it is thought that they may interfere with iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. These include:

  • coffee
  • tea
  • soft drinks
  • red wine
  • chocolate
  • ice cream
  • sweets
  • rhubarb
  • wheat bran
