Anaemia (from the Greek, meaning 'without blood') is a term that is used to describe a disorder in which there is a deficiency of red blood cells and/or haemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells that is responsible for carrying oxygen to the body tissues and organs). This deficiency may be caused by a number of factors, including diet, chronic illness and blood loss. Although anyone of any age can develop anaemia, women are more prone to the disorder than men.
