The musculoskeletal system (MSK) is an organ system that comprises of bones and muscles that lend support to the human body, protects its organs and enables it to move.
The bones are attached to other bones at the joints. In some cases the bones may be connected by collagen (for example, in the skull) or cartilage (for example, in the spine). However, the majority of joints are known as synovial, which means that there is a space between the articulating bones. This allows a wide variety of movements, governed by the contraction or relaxation of muscles that are either attached directly to the bone or by tendons.
In this section, you'll find information about the range of conditions that affect the bones, muscles and joints, including osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and herniated (slipped) discs.
