The respiratory system consists of two major sections: the upper respiratory tract (nose, sinuses, throat and pharynx) and the lower respiratory tract (larynx, trachea and lungs). The system is designed to move air in and out of the body, bringing oxygen in to oxygenate the blood, and moving carbon dioxide and other waste gases away from the circulation.
There are a number of diseases and conditions that affect the upper or lower respiratory tract, including so-called 'obstructive' conditions such as bronchitis and asthma that limit the flow of air to the lung, and infectious diseases such as pneumonia, influenza and laryngitis.
