The Swizzle cocktail originated in the West Indies at the beginning of the 19th century, and consists of spirit, lime juice, sugar syrup or a liqueur, crushed ice and occasionally soda water. Other ingredients such as fruit juices may also be added in small quantities to provide colour or subtle flavouring. The ingredients are shaken together and strained into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Soda water may then be added and the drink gently stirred with a swizzle stick.
