Betting on Horse Racing

Often referred to as 'the sport of Kings', a day's horseracing wouldn't be complete without placing a bet. There are 59 different horse racing courses across the UK, and going to the races is always an enjoyable and exciting day out. It's also very easy to place a bet at your local bookmakers, or even online.

There are two main types of races:

1. National Hunt Races

These races require the horses to jump over obstacles such as water ditches and fences. They are generally over a mile in length (some are over three miles) and are designed to test the jumping ability of runners, as well as their stamina.

2. Flat Races

As their title suggests, these races require no jumping. These are generally shorter in length, with the shortest being 5 furlong sprints (8 furlongs equals 1 mile). In these races, the speed of runners is usually more important than their stamina.

Avoid betting on a horse that has not raced in the past four weeks - they may be recuperating from illness and the owners are using the race as a warm-up. The winning percentages of long-rested horses are below average.

There are many types of bet available, such as the standard win, place or each way. There are also more complicated bets - for example, a forecast, which requires you to name in order the two horses that will pass the winning post in first and second place; or tricast which you name the three horses that will pass the winning post 1st, 2nd and 3rd, in order.

When betting, it is generally a good idea to place bets to win when the odds are greater than 5-1, and to place when the odds are less.
