Before you can take your theory test you must have a valid provisional driving licence, which you can apply for using an application form (form D1) from your local Post Office. Once you have a valid provisional driving licence, you can book your theory test online, over the phone or by post. The standard theory test fee for cars, motorcycles, lorries and buses is £21.50.
To book a theory test online or over the phone you will need a valid debit or credit card for payment (for example, Visa, Mastercard, Visa Electron, Delta, Switch/Maestro or Solo cards). You can normally book a theory test online between 6.30am and 10.30pm on weekdays and between 8am and 5pm on Saturdays. Call centres are open for booking and enquiries on Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm (except public and bank holidays). Check out the numbers and web address in the Useful Resources section.
You may also apply for your test by post using an application form, which is available online or by request from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) booking line. Payment can be made by credit or debit card, by cheque or by postal order; however, cash payments are not accepted.
You can cancel or reschedule a test online or over the phone via the booking line. If you give DSA at least 3 clear working days notice you can:
- move or change your appointment
- cancel your appointment and have a full refund of your fee
When you attend your test, you must bring your appointment letter and both parts of your valid provisional driving licence. If you have an old-style paper licence you must bring both your paper licence and a valid passport. If you do not bring these items with you, the centre may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.
