Cottage

The cottage loaf is a distinctively shaped traditional English loaf. It is formed using a round ball of dough (similar to a cob) with a smaller ball placed on top. Before baking, a hole is pressed through the middle of the top ball, down into the lower part to weld the two pieces together. This shape of bread is believed to date back to Roman times when it was devised to utilise the full height of the oven.
