Bran

Bran is the thin, papery, indigestible layer that surrounds the inner kernel of wheat and also other grains such as maize and oats. Packed with soluble fibre (which can help lower the cholesterol level in blood) and insoluble fibre (which is important for digestive health), bran can play an important part in the diet.

Wheat bran is a by-product of the refining processes of the wholewheat grain and can be bought in supermarkets and health food shops. It may be sprinkled on breakfast cereals, added to bread, cake and biscuit mixtures, or simply eaten plain with milk and sugar. Bran is also commonly used in the production of breakfast cereals, which can be a tasty way including fibre in the diet.
