Founded: 1964 from merger of Royal College of Science & Technology (founded 1796 as Anderson's Institution) and Scottish College of Commerce; merged 1993 with Jordanhill Education College.

Site: 2 sites in Glasgow: John Anderson Campus, in city centre; and Jordanhill Campus in west end.

How to get there: Glasgow well connected to all regions of the UK by train (5 1/2 hours from London to Glasgow Central, under an hour from Edinburgh), by coach (8h hours from London to Buchanan Bus Station), by air (1 hour flight from London to Glasgow Airport 7 miles from centre or Prestwick Airport 22 miles); by road (M8). John Anderson Campus close to Queen Street station and bus station.

Academic features: Flexible credit-based system for all courses. Assessment by course work as well as final examination; practical training and experience are features of many degree courses.

Main undergraduate awards: BA, BArch, BEd, BSc, BEngDipl. MEngDipl, MEng, BEng, MSci, MPharm, LLB.

Length of courses: 4 years (Honours); 5 years (MEng); 3 years (pass).

Library & information services: Anderson campus - 710,000 volumes, 1700 study places, short loan collection. Jordanhill campus - 200,000 volumes, 480 study places. Annual expenditure on information provision, £107 per (FTE) student. 700+ PCs, and 100+ Unix workstations, most with internet access. Apple Macs available at Jordanhill campus. Helpdesks on both campuses. User education programme covers simple orientation plus more advanced electronic resource training & information management skills.

Specialist collections: Fleck (chemistry) library, law library, rare books and manuscripts in Andersonian Library and Royal Scottish Geographical Society library; Jordanhill Archive.

Study abroad: 15% of students spend a period abroad. Exchange links with universities and colleges in Canada, US and Singapore (40-50 pa students involved) and with 170+ universities/colleges across Europe (all open to non-language specialists); approx 200 pa students go to Europe on Socrates programmes.

Careers: Extensive careers education programme, information and advice service; employers visits and vacancy bulletins. Lifelong service to graduates.

Student advice & services: Health clinics on site; consultant psychiatrist; chaplaincy centre; special needs adviser; counselling and financial advice service. Limited number of flats for married students; playgroup run by Students' Association.

Amenities: 10-storey Students' Association building with entertainment, sport, catering and support facilities.

Sporting facilities: Sports centre with large twin-court games hall; gymnasium, weights room, cardiovascular room, 6 squash courts, swimming pool; 5 football and 2 rugby pitches, 1 all-weather hockey pitch. 40+ sections of sports union, for most indoor and outdoor sports. Sports bursary scheme.

Accommodation: 40% of first years in university accommodation, 20% of all students (nearly 60% live at home). 2000 places available (1400 for first years): most self-catering places at approx £54 per week (£73 ensuite); some catered accommodation at Jordanhill, £67 pw; contracts 35-50 weeks. Students live in privately owned accommodation for 2 years, rents £50-£75 pw for self-catering, £70 for B&B.

Living expenses budget: £5200-£6200 pa (excluding tuition fees) recommended by university. Term time work: Majority of students work part-time and/or in holidays; careers service runs student employment service. Some work available on campus in SU, registries, accommodation.

Financial help: £767,000 government funds (including mature students' bursaries), 1500 students helped; plus various other funds (eg emergency aid fund). Special help: single parents, those with dependants or with disabilities.

Tuition fees: Scottish and EU students pay no fees during course; other UK home students up to £1200 pa for first degrees (in 2005). International students pay £7850-£9950 pa.
