Before a forecast can be made of what the weather is likely to be in the future, knowledge of the present situation is essential. Therefore, regular, reliable and accurate measurements are required. These have to be rapidly sent around the world using a telecommunications system dedicated to weather information.
These observations are fed into computer modelling programs and used to analyse the weather patterns at a particular time. Once the analysis has been carried out, the program produces a forecast of the weather for specified times in the future. The forecaster uses the output from the computer to produce weather forecasts that are tailored to a wide range of customers.
