FTP Access

ftp access

FTP (or File Transfer Protocol) is the most popular way of transferring files to and from a web server. There are two types of FTP access to a web server.

  1. Password protected FTP that is common for webmasters to utilise for managing their web files. Though some web hosts may provide a basic web interface to upload files within their control panel, not having direct FTP access to your web files can be burdersome at times. All paid hosting packages should offer password protected FTP access to your web space.
  2. Anonymous FTP is the other type of FTP access. You can post files to a publicly accessible directory and users may directly connect to your server with anonymous FTP to access these files. No password is required for this type of FTP access. Anonymous FTP access is very varely granted on shared hosts, and will generally only be available on dedicated servers since it requires a dedicated IP address.
