Laver is a purpley-red seaweed with a mildly sweet taste. In Wales, it is boiled to a pulp, then added to oatmeal and shaped into small flat cakes. This 'laverbread' is then usually fried and served with bacon or mutton.
In Japan, laver is known as 'nori', where it is dried and pressed into thin sheets, and then used to wrap sushi. It may also be toasted and crumbled into fine pieces as a salty garnish for rice dishes or to add flavouring to salads.
