It has become increasingly popular to try out recipes from all over the world; whilst this gives us an exciting variety of new dishes to try, it also presents us with the problem of different measuring systems. In the US, ingredients are rarely weighed out; they are measured out in cups - a term which sounds vague, but actually equates to 8 fluid ounces or 225 ml.
Measuring cups are available to buy in nested sets for amounts of 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 and 1 cup. Stainless steel is the most practical material - avoid other metals such as aluminium, as they may stain or corrode when using with acidic foods such as lemon juice. Plastic cups are cheaper, but they tend to absorb stains and grease, and may eventually break.
