Trevesia

Family: Araliaceae

This genus of 12 species of evergreen shrubs or small trees, which cones from tropical regions of Asia has large, palmate leaves, with prickly, red hairs on the new growth, and produces long clusters of white flowers during spring and summer.

Species

T. palmata, a small tree native to India, is the only species commonly cultivated out-side the tropics, where it is grown as an indoor plant. Usually around 6 m (20 ft), it has large, palmately lobed leaves, up to 60 cm (24 in) wide, and clusters of greenish white flowers. Because of the young growth, it has a prickly appearance.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. Provide a humid atmosphere and shade plants from direct, strong sun. Grow in pots of soil-based potting compost. Water sparingly in winter. Propagate from firm tip cuttings.

Climate

Tropical.
