Common Name: Rice Paper Plant

Comprising only one species of evergreen shrub or small tree, this genus is native to China and Taiwan. It is grown for its large, fan-like leaves and loose, showy clusters of creamy white, fluffy flowers, which bloom during autumn. The pith of the stems is used for making rice paper in China.

Species

T. papyrifer (Synonym: T. papyriferus) rice paper plant, grows to around 7 m (23 ft). The large, lobed leaves are densely covered in woolly hairs when young, and turn rust coloured as they age. Cultivar 'Variegata' has cream to white leaves tinged with shades of green.

Cultivation

Tetrapanax needs well-drained soil and a sunny, sheltered position. It dies back to the ground in frost, but generally produces new growth in spring. In hard-frost areas, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. Propagate by removing rooted suckers in spring.
