This genus is not well known outside its coun­tries of origin. It is native to South Africa and Madagascar and consists of five species of shrubs and perennials, all of which are aro­matic and somewhat succulent. In frost-prone climates, grow these frost-tender plants in an intermediate to warm greenhouse or conser­vatory.

Species

T. riparia, misty plume bush, musk bush or nutmeg bush, grows to around 2 m (6 ft) high. The sprays of fluffy, mauve or white flowers are 20-40 cm (8-16 in) long, and the foliage is highly aromatic. It is a native of South Africa, where it flowers during the winter.

Cultivation

Under glass, grow in pots of soil-based potting compost and provide good light, but shade from direct, strong sun. Outdoors grow in a sheltered position with partial shade. Prune back hard after flowering to encourage a compact shape and new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as this will promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Propagate from cuttings in spring and root them in a heated propagating case.
