Originating in Asia, this genus consists of 11 species of evergreen shrubs, grown mostly for their attractive foliage and sweetly perfumed, though insignificant flowers, which appear in late winter through to spring. These low, dense shrubs are useful border plants and may also be grown as understorey plants under taller trees and shrubs.

Species

S. confusa, zone 6, a dense shrub, to 2 m (6 ft), has attractive foliage and small, white flowers, followed by black berries.

S. hookeriana, zone 6, forms a dense clump of upright, somewhat arching stems which grows to around 2 m (6 ft). Small, fragrant, white flowers are followed by black berries.

S. ruscifolia, zone 8, forms a dense clump to about 1 m (3 ft) high, with cream, scented flowers and red berries.

Cultivation

Sweet boxes need moist yet well-drained soil with plenty of humus, partial or full shade, and a sheltered position. Propagate by division in late winter or from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
