These evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs are found in warm and tropical regions around the world. The genus comprises around 100 species. Some yield the raw latex used in the manufacture of rubber, while S. sebiferum contains a white, waxy seed covering which is made into soap and candles. In the garden, sapiums are useful as ornamentals or for shade.

Species

S. sebiferum, Chinese tallow tree, is the most commonly cultivated. Native to warm regions of China and Japan, it is a fast-growing, attractive tree, to 10 m (33 ft), with a spreading crown. The soft, heart-shaped leaves colour red in autumn and the small, greenish yellow flowers are borne in catkins in spring. This species has become naturalized in some countries.

Cultivation

These plants do best in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, in full sun. They are easily grown from seed.
