Originating from India and China, this genus comprises only one species, a showy, evergreen shrub with oval or elliptic, alternate leaves and single or clustered, yellow, winter flowers.

Species

R. indica, yellow flax, grows to 1 m (3 ft) high, with bright green, smooth, oval leaves and bright yellow flowers, which appear from autumn to the end of spring.

Cultivation

In frost-prone climates, grow in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory, in pots of soil-based potting compost. Provide good light (but shade from direct strong sun), and a slightly humid atmosphere. In the garden, plant in rich soil with an open, sunny aspect, although these plants will tolerate partial shade. Water regularly during the growing season. Pinch back stems frequently to encourage compact, bushy growth and prune back hard in late spring, after flowering, to ensure vigorous, shapely growth. Propagate from soft tip cuttings in early summer.
