Native to North America, these hardy perennials make a striking display in borders and wild gardens. The attractive, terminal flower spikes may be pale pink, magenta or white, and make good cut flowers.

Species

P. virginiana, obedient plant, is the most widely grown of the species, seldom reaching over 1.5 m (5 ft). The hinge-like structure of the flower stalks allows them to be moved and `obediently' stay in place. The leaves are lance-shaped and serrated, and the flowers may be magenta, pink or white. Cultivar 'Alba' has white flowers; 'Gigantea' grows to 2 m (6 ft) high; and 'Vivid' has deep purple-pink blooms.

Cultivation

Most garden soils will be suitable, with full sun or partial shade. Propagate by division of the clumps or from seed. After flowering, cut plants back, as old stems can look shabby.
