There are two major types of ice-cream scoop; the first has a blade that sweeps between the ice-cream and the bowl of the scoop and then releases a perfectly-shaped ball of ice cream. It can also be used for serving mashed potatoes and puréed vegetables.
The second type of scoop does not have a blade mechanism, but instead contains a non-toxic anti-freeze fluid that allows the user to scoop out hard sorbets and ice-cream easily.
