Every cook should own a variety of spatulas; they are invaluable for a whole host of kitchen tasks, such as stirring, folding, mixing, scraping, turning and serving. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, each of which can be used for a different purpose.
Wooden Spatulas
This indispensable tool can be used to turn foods over in non-stick pans, and its slightly angled edge is perfect for scraping mixtures out of the corners of pans. Pierced or slotted spatulas are also available, which are useful for lifting and draining fried food.
Rubber and Plastic Spatulas
There are few tools that can scrape out a container quite as thoroughly as a rubber of plastic spatula. They have a rounded side and an angular edge designed to fit into every nook and cranny of any pot, pan, bowl or jar.
Never use plastic or rubber spatulas near hot pans - they will melt. Rubber utensils will also perish if you leave them in hot water or put them in the dishwasher.
Silicone Spatulas
The most versatile spatula; this handy tool can be used to turn and lift food in hot pans, and its soft blade will not damage non-stick surfaces. Try to find one with a wooden handle, this will stay cool when you use it near the heat.
