Full- and part-time postgraduate students with a disability or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia may be eligible to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). This is a non-repayable grant of up to £5,780 a year.
DSAs cover four types of help:
- A non-medical helper, such as a note-taker or reader.
- Specialist equipment required for studying, such as computer software.
- Extra travel costs incurred because of the disability.
- Other costs, such as Braille paper or tapes.
Students can apply for a grant at the start of each academic year by completing a DSA1 application form and taking it to their university or college for signature. However, students who already receive a bursary or award from a research council, General Social Care Council or their college or university will not qualify for a DSA.
