Financial Help for Disabled Students

Full- and part-time postgraduate students with a disability or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia or dyspraxia may be eligible to apply for the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). This is a non-repayable grant of up to £5,780 a year.

DSAs cover four types of help:

  1. A non-medical helper, such as a note-taker or reader.
  2. Specialist equipment required for studying, such as computer software.
  3. Extra travel costs incurred because of the disability.
  4. Other costs, such as Braille paper or tapes.

Students can apply for a grant at the start of each academic year by completing a DSA1 application form and taking it to their university or college for signature. However, students who already receive a bursary or award from a research council, General Social Care Council or their college or university will not qualify for a DSA.
