These splendid, flowering bulbs from tropical and southern Africa generally have broad green leaves and clusters of most unusual flowers. Many plants in this genus are now classified as Scadoxus.

Species

H. albiflos, to 30 cm (12 in), has fleshy leaves and greenish white flowers and is the most commonly cultivated species.

H. coccineus, to 25 cm (10 in), is quite spectac­ular, with purple-spotted stems and bright red flowers, with yellow stamens, surrounded by scarlet to pink bracts.

H. magnificus, (now Scadoxus puniceus), giant stove brush, has 30-40 cm (12-16 in) long leaves and bright scarlet flowers.

Cultivation

In frost-prone areas, grow in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory, in pots of soil-based potting compost. Plant in autumn, the bulb neck showing above compost level. Ensure maximum light. When dormant, keep herbaceous species dry and evergreens slightly moist. For optimum flowering, allow bulbs to become pot-bound. Propagate from offsets.
