Harpephyllum

Family: Anacardiaceae
Common Name: Kaffir Plum, Wild Plum

There is only one species in this South African genus. An attractive evergreen tree, it is used as a lawn specimen or for street plantings.

Species

H. caffrum, kaffir plum, is a dense, broadly domed tree, which grows to a height and width of 10-15 m (33-50 ft). It has a short, straight trunk, glossy, dark green leaves and small, white flowers. The small, red fruit makes a tasty jam.

Cultivation

Kaffir plum prefers a warm climate, so if frosts are a problem it should be grown as a small foliage plant in a cool to intermediate greenhouse or conservatory. Propagate from seed.

Climate

Should succeed in sheltered warm areas of zone 9, plus zone 10.
