Common Name: Winter's Bark

Only one species of this small genus of ever-green trees and shrubs, mainly native to South America, is common in cultivation.

Species

D. winteri, winter's bark, grows to 15 m (50 ft) in its habitat but is much smaller in cul­tivation. Its leaves and bark have a peppery aroma and its ivory-white flowers have a jas­mine-like fragrance.

Cultivation

Drimys requires moist but well-drained conditions and shelter from strong winds. Propagate from seed, or from cuttings of half-ripe shoots taken in summer.
