Disanthus

This is a genus of one species of deciduous shrub from Japan, highly valued for its beauti­ful foliage.

Species

D. cercidifolius reaches around 4 m (13 ft) in its native habitat. It has rather heart-shaped, blue-green leaves which colour rich orange, scarlet or crimson in autumn. Against light, the foliage takes on a luminous brilliance. Small, lightly scented, deep purple to red flow­ers appear in autumn.

Cultivation

Disanthus can be grown in similar conditions to rhododendron and azaleas. It likes a cool, moist, peaty, acid soil and a shel­tered position. These shrubs can be easily transplanted in winter during their dormant period. Propagate by layers or from seed sown in autumn or spring.
