Dove tree, one common name for this single-species genus from western China, derives from the unusual, bird-like white bracts surrounding its flowers. This tree should be given pride of place in the garden as an outstanding specimen tree.

Species

D. involucrata is a hardy, deciduous tree, to 15 m (50 ft), with broad, ovate leaves, downy underneath, insignificant reddish brown flowers and the characteristic large, leafy bracts. Var. vilmoriniana is similar, but the undersides of the leaves are hairless.

Cultivation

Davidia thrives in woodland condi­tions, with moist yet well-drained soil, partial shade or sun, and shelter from cold winds. Propagate from seed sown in a garden frame in autumn.

Zone 6. Prefers a cool, moist climate.
