This genus of only one species originates from the rainforests of north-eastern Australia. It is grown for its handsome timber and its attractive, evergreen foliage which makes it a useful shade tree.

Species

C. australe, Moreton Bay chestnut or black bean tree, grows to 18 m (60 ft) and has large, glossy, pinnate leaves, sprays of striking yellow to orange-red pea-flowers with long stamens, and large, bean-like seed pods. The fruit of this tree is poisonous if eaten raw, though it is the subject of much research as it has potential for use in drugs for the treatment of AIDS.

Cultivation

In climates where hard frosts occur, grow as a pot plant in an intermediate greenhouse or conservatory where it makes a pleasing foliage specimen. Use a soil-based potting compost. Provide maximum light but shade from direct sun. Outdoors, plant in a light soil in a sunny position.
